Professional Year in Accounting

The Skilled Migration Internship Program: Accounting (SMIPA) is a professional year program approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) available to overseas students who have an Australian accounting degree qualification as a result of at least two years' study in Australia. The program consists of training and an accounting internship placement designed to improve the career prospects of international accounting graduates from Australian universities.

To qualify for the Professional Year Accounting Program (SMIPA), you must:

  • have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate award in Australia, in Accounting
  • hold or applied for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485, either stream) with at least 12 months validity or;
  • have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, in all 4 competencies, or equivalent
  • provide a valid skills assessment from a professional accounting association

  • 44 week program, as gazetted by DIBP
  • 12 week Accounting internship
  • 32 weeks of coursework covering Australian work practice, WHS, business communications and job hunting advice

Professional Year in IT

The ACS Professional Year (PYear) Program in Computing/ICT provides an additional pathway from university to employment within Australia, offering a job-readiness program to equip you with the professional skills needed for a successful career in the Australian workforce.

To qualify for the ACS Professional Year Program, you must:

  • have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate award in Australia, in ICT
  • hold or applied for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485, either stream) with at least 12 months validity or;
  • have an IELTS score of 6 overall, with no band below 5, or equivalent

  • 44 -52 weeks practical training, face to face study and workshops
  • 12 week hands-on internship with a host company
  • access to networking opportunities and professional development as a graduate member of the Australian ICT industry's professional body

Professional Year in Engineering

The Engineers Australia's Professional Year in Engineering program was developed by Engineering Education Australia (EEA) to equip international graduates of Australian universities with the skills and experience they need to start a successful career. The program consists of training and an engineering internship placement to provide a pathway from study to employment in Australia.

To qualify for the Engineers Australia's Professional Year in Engineering Program, you must:

  • have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate award in Australia in Engineering
  • hold a valid skills assessment from Engineering Education Australia
  • hold or applied for a 485 visa (either stream) with at least 12 months validity or;
  • have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 with no band below 5, or equivalent
Offshore university graduates may be eligible to complete the Professional Year in Engineering on a 476 visa.

- have achieved English requirement as follows:

- Accounting - have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, in all 4 competencies, or equivalent

- Information Technology - have a minimum IELTS score of 6 overall, with no band below 5, or equivalent

- Engineering - have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 with no band below 5, or equivalent

It is a 44 week program that includes 32 weeks of coursework covering Australian work practice, WHS, business communications and job hunting advice along with 12 weeks Australian workplace internship in the chosen profession.

To join Professional year program you will need to hold either a subclass 485 Temporary Resident Visa for skilled migration or show evidence of your application as Bridging visa.

Both weekdays or weekends options are available. It's a usually 1 class per week but the class timing changes from one provider to the other.
